Beach-A great stretch of beach that is excellent to take a long walk and swim. Charges (extra) - Spa services, Internet access, golf and horseback riding would be extra. Distances- Located in the Playacar Resort area and about a 20 minute walk into Playa del Carmen or a short 5 minute cab ride for only $5 each way. I really like Playacar. It has this secure upscale feeling to it. I felt very safe walking outside the resort in the evening. Entertainment on Property -Varied entertainment and activities during the day and evening. They have a different show each night in the theatre. Fitness Area - An adequate fitness area with machines and treadmills.
Getting Around- Very easy to get into Playa del Carmen and back. If you do not feel like walking, a short cab ride is only $5 each way. Internet Access -There is an hourly charge for internet access from the small business center. Jackets and Ties- Keep them at home, but bring slacks and polo shirt for dinner in the A la Carte restaurants. Kids- There are children's programs that include pool and beach games, arts and crafts and talent shows. Lighting-The resort is well laid out and well lit at night. Medical Services-On call medical services.
Nightlife- Not only are there shows each night at the resort, guests may use the La Pinata Disco at the Riu Tequila and there is plenty of nightlife in Playa del Carmen. Opportunities-You may dine and use the facilities at the Riu Yucatan and Riu Tequila. Pool-A great pool area. Ok, no infinity pool but I am ok with the swim up pool bar. Protection-This was a negative to me since they did not have in room safes. I had to open a safety deposit box which meant one more key to potentially lose. Recreation-Tennis, volleyball, sailing, windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking .....should I go on?
Shopping-Small gift shop on property. Plenty of shopping in Playa del Carmen. Terrain-Good mix of foliage and openness. Tipping-Not required but as with any service industry, if your bartender, room service attendant or concierge really shines, they will appreciate the small gratuity since most people will not be tipping anyway. Updates-There is a new Sports Bar opening at the Riu Tequila of which guests of the Playacar can use. Not that us guys need our sports fix! View-Most of the rooms will have a garden or pool view based on how the property sits along the ocean. Weather-December through May are the driest months. September through November are the wettest months WOW Factor - Fantastic location, great value and rooms that work great for people who need more than one room. X-Y-Z-The Riu Playacar offers a great resort without breaking open the piggy bank. |

Riu Playacar is a comfortable beachfront All-Inclusive resort with a main building surrounded by 2-3story bungalows and 15,000 square meters of tropical garden area. Each air-conditioned room features ceiling fan, mini-bar, private balcony or terrace. The Mexican Street offers a vast array of shops, services and boutiques. Guests can also enjoy food and beverage service until 2am, free entrance and drinks at two discos, and the use of all bars within the Riu complex (except those at Riu Palace). Beach: Riu Playacar is situated on a white sandy beachfront dotted with lounge chairs, perfect for relaxing beneath the warm Caribbean sun. Ambiance-The Riu Playacar had this very tropical feel to it. The colors of the buildings reminded me of being in Jamaica or the Bahamas. Where its sister resort the Riu Yucatan has a jungle feel, the Riu Playacar has a bit more open airy feeling to it. 
Food- 2 restaurants on the property itself but you may dine at any of the other 5 a la carte restaurants at its sister properties, the Riu Yucatan and Riu Tequila, both a very short walk from the resort. Cuisines include Asian, Mediterranean, a steakhouse and grill. 
Negatives- The one negative I have with all the Riu Resorts and for most people it is not a big deal is the double beds in all of the rooms are usually inches apart so even though it is two beds you might feel everyone is sleeping in one big bed. For the European clientele, this is not a big deal but for the American market it may or may not be a big deal. 
Rooms-What sets this property apart is if you need two rooms, many the standard rooms area separated by a common hallway with it's own door so you can feel like you have your own multi bedroom unit.
